Why should you clean your water tank?
The CSIRO recommends to have your water tank professionally cleaned every 2-3 years to help maintain water quality and ensure your tank continues to operate efficiently. However, depending on your environment and surrounding conditions, your tank may require cleaning sooner.
Common signs your tank may need cleaning include:
- Unpleasant odours in the water
- Murky, discoloured or dirty-looking water
- Frequently blocked filters
- Reduced water pressure
- Visible sediment or build-up inside the tank
Even a well-maintained water tanks will gradually accumulate sediment, organic matter and other contaminants over time. If left untreated, harmful bacteria such as E. Coli can develop, creating potential health risks for those using the water.
Leaves, twigs and other debris washed from your roof and gutters can also introduce tannins into your water, often giving it a brown or tea-like appearance. Tannin-stained water is usually an indication that additional sediment and organic material have entered the tank and should be removed.
Regular tank cleaning not only helps protect the quality of your water, but can also extend the life of your water system. Dirty water can contribute to premature wear and blockages in pumps, pipework, filters, washing machines and other appliances connected to your water supply.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. Does my tank need to be empty or full before you arrive?
Neither. We require at least 500mm (half a metre) of water in the tank to complete the clean, so we cannot clean an empty tank. A full tank is ideal, but as long as there is sufficient water, we can carry out the service.
2. How do you clean a water tank?
We use specialised vacuum equipment to remove sediment, sludge and debris from the bottom of the tank while retaining the majority of your water.
If the water has become contaminated—for example by leaves, a deceased animal or excessive organic matter—the tank may need to be completely emptied, cleaned and refilled with fresh water.
For a standard tank clean, you'll typically lose around 300mm of water, which is safely pumped onto your lawn or garden.
3. Do you sanitise or filter the water?
We can treat your tank with TankSafe®, a water treatment product that helps eliminate harmful bacteria, if requested.
We do not filter the water as part of our tank cleaning service.

5. How often should I have my water tank cleaned?

Depending on your environment, surrounding trees and rainfall, your tank may require cleaning more frequently.
6. What happens if I don't clean my water tank?
Over time, sediment, leaves and organic matter settle on the bottom of the tank. If left unchecked, this build-up can encourage the growth of algae and harmful bacteria, reduce water quality and place additional strain on pumps, filters and other connected equipment.
Regular cleaning helps keep your water cleaner and protects your water system.
7. How long does a tank clean take?
Most tank cleans take around one hour. The exact time depends on the size of the tank and the amount of sediment or contamination present.
8. Do you need truck access to my tank?
No. We complete our tank cleaning using a ute and specialised trailer, allowing us to access most residential and rural properties without requiring a large truck.
9. Can you remove old water tanks and install new ones?
Yes. We can demolish and remove existing tanks and assist with the supply and installation of a new poly water tank to suit your needs. Find out more here
10. Do you repair concrete water tanks?
We can carry out repairs to concrete tanks; however, in our experience, these repairs are often only a temporary solution. Cracks reopen over time, resulting in further leaks.
Where a tank is beyond economical repair, we generally recommend replacing it with a new poly tank, which provides a more reliable long-term solution.
11. Do you offer discounts for multiple tank cleans?
Yes. Cleaning one or two tanks is generally charged at our standard rate.
